Sheffield Butterfly House

On Friday, we visited the Sheffield Butterfly House for our new topic- Beast Creator. We learnt lots of information about insects and the three body parts; head, thorax and the abdomen. We were lucky enough to handle a Hissing Cockroach, Stick Insect, Giant African Snail and a Chilien Tarantula.

Our bug hotel

Last week, we were lucky enough to have a visitor come to school to help us build a bug hotel. We learnt about the habitats different minibeasts live in and then used this information to create a bug hotel.

Worm Charming

Year 5 were set a challenge last week- to predict how many worms were living underneath our school field. They had to apply their understanding of area and column multiplication to do this.

They also had to learn a brand new skill– WORM CHARMING! (Some children also adapted the method to include singing!)

The children marked out a 1m by 1m square on the field and used worm charming (gently tapping the ground) to count how many worms were living in the square.

They then measured the length and width of the field and used this, and the results from the 1m square area, to make their prediction.

Fractions!!!!!!!!!

This half term, we have been learning about fractions. We are absolute superstars when it comes to this area of maths. We have loved using bar modelling and practical resources to learn how to order, compare, add, subtract and simplify fractions!
We have really enjoyed using our reasoning and problem solving skills to apply our learning as well.

Who eats who?

Our exciting new topic is: WHO EATS WHO? Over the next two half terms, we will be learning all about life cycles, habitats and interdependence and adaptation.

As an exciting start to our topic, we visited Sheffield Tropical Butterfly House on Wednesday. Although it was cold and wet, we had a brilliant day and learnt lots of new information. We were able to see and hold a range of insects and some of the children were even able to hold a snake!

Measures

February 21st, 2016

In maths, we have  learnt all about measures. We spent time finding the area and perimeter of a range of shapes and solving problems involving this. We also learnt how to find the area of triangles and carried out some interesting investigations into the areas of triangles. We had a lot of fun!

One of our favourite areas of this topic was volume. We loved finding the volume of cubes and cuboids. Here are a couple of pictures of us building cubes with multi-link to help us find their volumes.SDC12571 SDC12572

Are we alone?

Last half term, Year 5 learnt all about space! They had a fantastic time, especially learning about what Tim Peake had been doing on the ISS.

To begin the topic, a space dome came to school and we were able to go inside and see phenomenal images of the Solar System. The children really enjoyed it and asked some brilliant questions afterwards.

During the topic they learnt:

  • that the Earth, Sun and Moon are all spherical
  • that the planets orbit around the Sun  (they found out that people used to believe that the Earth was at the center of the Solar System)
  • why we have day and night
  • why some days are longer than others
  • about the phases of the moon

The children have also been learning at home and bringing in new facts and information that they have enjoyed researching.

Mysterious Mixtures and Solutions

As we came into class on Thursday, we noticed that the Alchemist’s apprentice had been back. This time, however, instead of a riddle, he had left us some interesting mixtures and solutions from Alchemy Island. There was: a rainbow mixture from the Rainbow Dunes; a swamp mixture from the Fogwind Swamp, and a saltwater solution from Silver Shingle beach.

Our task was to decide how to separate the mixtures and solutions. We learnt about evaporation, filtration and sieving and then chose our method, explaining our reasoning.

It was messy but lots of fun and now we have a set of co-ordinates as a reward so we can continue our journey around the island.

How do you get there?

November 16th, 2015

Last week,we couldn’t wait to get started on our exciting, new topic. The only problem was that we didn’t know where the portal was to get to Alchemy Island. However, we searched high and low all around school and eventually we found some area that we suspected may hold the answer.

We took photos of them using the iPads and then used an app called Photo Editor to make them look more mysterious.
